I was introduced to this song from a DJ Flula Auto Tune Cover. And found the song very interesting and catchy and the video hilarious! I know it has some sexual imagery in it that I’d prefer wasn’t, but at least a lot of it seems to be tongue-in-cheek as opposed to most of the blatant in-your-face sexuality in most pop music videos.
And a very interesting article HERE on Wikipedia. This whole thing intrigued me for a number of reasons; our family connection to Korea, introduction of K-Pop to many in the world through this song and video, and PSY himself obviously doesn’t have a super-star build and look (as opposed to Rain). And really fun to watch his dance moves with his look.
Another interesting thing is the whole “Gangnam” theme. The first thing I thought about in English is the whole “Gangsta” theme. And there are some similarities to some Gangsta type songs where the guy might be riding in a hyped-up SUV with gold and diamonds and all. But this comment is really interesting in Wikipedia:
“Gangnam Style” is a Korean language colloquialism that refers to a luxurious lifestyle associated with the Gangnam district, an affluent and trendy area of Seoul…
The “skewering [of] the Gangnam image” by the “non-Gangnam PSY” is recognizable to Korean viewers…
To me, PSY seems to be poking fun at the cultural elitism in his own culture as PSY is obviously known as “non-Gangnam” in his country. And he probably doesn’t really look Gangnam style either, I would presume. So on that count, I love what he’s doing here as well. You can see this with his inclusion of a couple of Korean comedian/television personalities.
Anyhow, thoughts anyone?
